Black and white...

I have picked out all these different images because they all inspire me in some way. Some of them are from music and some are from fashion. I am thinking about using black and white on my album cover. Beacuse of this i have been looking for inspiration and have put my ideas all together on a moodboard. I have tried to focus on pictures that give off more of an indie feel more than anything else. They have inspired me to really think about using black and white, because i think that it makes the pictures look vintage and i also think it will appeal to my audience.

Album cover research...

I really like this album cover for "lungs" of florence and the machine's. This was her first debut album and i think that its just so creative and inspirational. The bit i most like on this cover are where they show the lungs to show the album name in more detail. I dont think that once you've seen this cover, you'd ever really forget what it looked like, because its so bold and really stands out on the shelves.

YYY's album covers...

This is they YYY's first album cover. As you can say it really relates to the type of music they play/song. It's very wacky and busy. There's lots of things going on and is also very colourful/bold.

This is the YYY's second album cover. This cover is also very bright and bold. However, its not as busy and there's not really much going on. I can imagine this album cover was relatively easy to make compared to their first one. (one above)

The YYY's third and most recent album cover is this one. This is very plain a simple. However, the creativity put into it is very clever. I also think this album cover was fairly easy to create.

I think that apart from the first one, these covers have nothing to do with the band or the song which is what is so good and creative about them.

Twitter account...

Today i set up a twitter account for my band...

....I did this because i felt that it would give my band a real sort of fan base. It also helps to tell people my thoughts about my music video and lets people get to know my band, so that they know what to expect from them.

Emailing for permission...

As stated a couple of weeks ago, i contacted the YYY's and asked for permission to use their song. I have now finally recieved a reply back, and also replyed back again to the lady who i spoke to stating which band im interested in, as apparently its not just a contact for the YYY'S.

Ideas...

This is a picture of Ladyhawke. I really like the black and white version of this picture. I want to create something like this for the front of my album cover, as i feel it really represents the sort of artists/genre my band are. This is also the look i want to create. The clothes Ladyhawke is wearing here, are similar to what my characters are wearing in the video. I will follow a similar thing on for my album cover and poster, but will maybe change and adjust some of the clothing, but still keeping it really bold and indie.

Questionnaire For Audience Feedback...

I will also print off copies of this ready to give my class when its time to feedback.

Iconic Imagery...

These pictures of the libertines really inspire me. I really like the use of not having colour, as i think it gives off an old, retro look to the picture, which would be great to use on my poster and album cover. I think the setting's in these pictures are very easy to create. Most of them are set on street's which would be easy to use as a setting, because there are endless streets/places to use.

These pictures of the Ramones are also very inspirational to me. I really like how in the 3rd picture i have they have used quite a random setting. In most of their pictures/posters they stand infront of a brick wall, so i think that the messy scene is something different and plays along with their genre of music really well. Another thing i'd like to point out is that most of their pictures are in black and white, i think this also helps to give off a old rocky feel.

I think all these pictures obviously appeal to people who like Indie/rock music. The unique and individual feel to the pictures is what makes them different. I think teenagers who like indie or rock music would really appreciate the difference in these photos. I think what they are wearing, the set and the colours of the photos are what make them iconic and what appeals to the audience. The set especially makes them look of an indie/rock genre, because it's so random and creative. The leather jacket and the jeans that they wear are also what makes them look iconic.

New Plans...

As i stated before about not having a camera to work with during half-term, i will now be filming thursday and friday of this week, and also sunday...this will then give me a week to edit before the deadline.

Filming...

I planned to shoot some of my shots needed for my video during half-term. I ordered a camera from school to take out during the week. However, i stupidly forgot to pick it up before i left school on the friday. Luckily i wasn't filming to much and my charactes will be available to film the week we get back.

Similar video's to my inspiration...

These video's are all very similar to ladyhawke's video for "my delirium" what i have used on my blog for inspiration. These video's were all produced before ladyhawke's and so i assume the producer of ladyhawke's video must of been very inspired by all three. Especially, the cardigans video for "my favourite game". As you can see in parts ladyhawke's video is almost exactly the same as this. The others are also similar for the car shots.

Some Location Shots...

More to be added:

I have chosen to use this location for part of my video as i think it gives off the derelict scene that i wanted to create. I have yet to take pictures of the rest of my locations, but they are on their way.

Questionaire feedback...

After giving out 10 copies of my questionnaire, i managed to receive 8 responses back, which was a pretty good number to work with. I received varied feedback which was a surprise to me. 1 questions feedback that i found interesting was "do you think a music video has to have a narrative?" Answers were all against having a narrative, and people said that they would prefer to watch a video that was random or what had no story to it. The answers to the question "What attracts you to a music video" i wasn't surprised by. This was because most people said that the thing that attracts them to a music video was the band who was in it/playing the song. These answers didn't surprise me as people watch music videos of their favourite bands/artists.

Emailing for permission...

Today i emailed the "Yeah yeah yeah's" manager for permission to use one of thier songs. I hope they get back to me quickly, so that i can get on with my filming as soon as possible.

Analysing "VCR" (The xx)

The genre characteristics that are evident in this video are what they are wearing. You can tell that its of an indie genre because of their clothes and the fact the video is set in what looks like a derelict scenery, which is what i want to try and create. The relationship between the lyrics and the visuals is disjuncture. The meaning of the song "VCR" is completely ignored. The visual style of the song is very indie, so there tends to be more of a need to have quite few close-ups of the band or the lead vocalist. This video is an indie, quite depressing video.

This part of the song has a lot of off beat editing. The beat of the song in the first few seconds is quite sow, and the editing is just that little bit faster. The lengths of the shots are quite short, and the genre is reflected through the mise-en-scene and the props. The mise-en-scene and the fact that the video is in black and white maybe represents how the characters are feeling.

In this part of the video there is a heavy use of tracking dollies and long shots. The camera work in this part of the video is very varied. In contains close-ups, long shots and mid shots whilst also containing tracking shots. At this point the video is starting to create some sort of storyline/narrative although it still seems to be quite random. The editing also starts to become a little more synchronised with the action.

At this point in the video, colours start to come into things. Before the whole thing was in black and white. The story has now become a little clearer, and i think its a boy girl split up, and then get back together story. I think the black and white was used to represent their unhappiness when apart, then when they make up things become more clearer and bright and start to become a little more colourful. The camera work in this part is still varied and they have used quite alot of different angles.

Near the end of the video, the story becomes even more random when they start to bring animals into it. Overall this video doesn't really make any sense to me, but i think that's why i like it so much. Its a very abstract video as there is no clear narrative and no lip syncing. The lyrics establish more of a general feeling rather than a meaning. I think this part of the video gives off that the mise-en-scene is reflecting their feelings, which is why the animals were involved. This part as well as the whole of the video really has off beat editing and it isn't really syncronised with the action either.

Band Profile....

IRIS POLLY

This is Polly. A present member of Iris Polly. In her spare time Polly loves to socialise with friends and write new songs for her bands next album. She loves Indie music, but she loves to give pretty much anything a listen. She's very interested in fashion, and is a keen indie vintage clothes buyer. Her style is very unique and fits well with the genre of music they play and listen too.

This is Iris, the second member of Iris Polly. Iris also loves to hang out with friends. Polly tends to write most of their songs, however, Iris has an input, in which she has made good contributions before. Iris's style is very similar to Polly's which is why they are a good match, and work together really well as a band. Iris also loves indie vintage clothes and messy hair, she is very individual with her style.

They have produced covers before including ladyhawke's "Paris is burning" which have all become very successful, hitting a fair position in the download chart. Iris Polly have been writing songs for the past 2 years and so far they've had great success. At this point in their career they are writing their 3rd album to which they hope will be just as popular with their fans as the other two.

Analysing "Can't stand me now" (The Libertines)

This video is a stage performance, which shows the genre characteristics. What they are wearing and what they are playing also shows the genre. The relationship between the lyrics and the visuals shows disjuncture. In this video the meaning of the song is completely ignored and its just a stage performance with an audience. The visual style is the need for a lot of close-ups of the band. There are a lot of still images in this video.

In this part of the video the shots are of a very short length. The tempo of the music drives the editing and the shot change is on beat. The genre in this part is reflected in the mise-en-scene and the editing style. The camera work is all very close-up to the band or the audience. Also in this part of the video they're repeated images and shots of the audience and the band. This is a performance video as it's set at a performance, on stage in front of the audience.

In this chop of the video. The camera work starts off to be in slow-motion and the lengths of the shots are long. At the beginning of this part there is a heavy use of tracking dollies making different camera angles. The camera work is used to show the band rather than the audience. This is also part of a performance video, as its on a stage in front of an audience. This has no narrative to it.

This video has a documentary feel to it. It contains a montage effect which is what i want to create. This particular part of the video has a lot of close-ups and mid shots of the band especially. It represents the fact that this video is a performance video.

Schedule for filming...

My Schedule planned out so far consists of the following:

18Th-22ND October: Shots whilst filming to show costume and set etc.

25Th October-5Th November: Editing footage for draft version.

Lyrics (Written out)...

Off with your head
Dance ’til you’re dead
Heads will roll (4x)
On the floor

Glitter on the west streets
Silver over everything
the rivers all wet
you’re all chrome

Dripping with alchemy
Shiver stop shivering
the glitter’s all wet
you’re all chrome

The men cry out the girls cry out
The men cry out the girls cry out
The men cry out, oh no
(repeat)

Off with your head
Dance ’til you’re dead
Heads will roll (4x)
On the floor

You can last
take the past
Shut your eyes
Realize

Glitter on the west streets
Silver over everything
the glitter’s all wet
you’re all chrome
you’re all chrome

Oh oh
Off off off with your head
Dance dance dance ’til you’re dead
Off off off with your head
Dance dance dance ’til you’re dead
Off off off with your head
Dance dance dance ’til you’re dead…

Lyrics to my chosen song..

These are the lyrics to my chosen song. With them being on here i can access them easier than if they were on youtube. From here my characters can also learn some of the lyrics that they have to lip sync.

Sleigh Bells- Infinity Guitars

This video has been very inspirational to me. I want to try and create the same sort of scene in my video, so having it on my blog will be useful to me. As i say this video inspires me greatly. However, the thing that is very inspirational to me is definitely the scene. I really like how they've set the scene to match the genre, and how it's really simple but so effective. The setting is very plain, but it really suits the type of song and the lyrics with it. This sort of thing is what i want to try and re-create for my video.

Background Information

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are an American indie band, who were formed in NYC in 2000. The band is made up of vocalist and pianist Karen O, guitarist and keyboardist Nick Zinner and drummer Brian Chase. The band has recorded three studio albums which are:
"Fever to Tell" released in 2003 , "Show Your Bones" released in 2006 (This was named the second best album of the year by NME). And, their third studio album "It's Blitz!" was released in 2009.
Karen O and Brian Chase first met at college in the late 90's. Karen then went on to study at New York university, where she met Zinner in a local bar and were said to have an "instant connection". After the drummer they decided to recruit initially bailed out, Chase joined the group and they formed a punk band. After the band had wrote a few songs, they were soon picked up to support bands like the "Strokes" and the "White Stripes", which earned them a good place in the punk industry. In 2001 they released their first EP. Early the following year they stepped into the spotlight by touring the U.S AND EUROPE supporting bands, and eventually commenced their first U.K tour. They then wen on to record their album's and to be as big as they are now on the music scene.
